To Name a Human

Many of you, our devoted readers, family, and friends, have been asking, "What are you calling Lilian Mae Walker?" Lilian? Lilian-Mae? Lily? Lily Mae? Lilsters? Liwily? Jeremy and I have been thinking for months on how to answer this question - before she was born even. You may have noticed on the blog that I am using different forms, and we do the same in "real life". I guess you could say we are "trying them on her for size" because the answer is - we dont know!

"Lilian" was the name that we loved originally - a family name, also from an Emmylou Harris song that means a lot to us, and could be simplified into "Lily", a name which represents our love of nature (and also a reminder of our wedding, the flowers we carried). Jeremy came up with "Mae" - we both think it is a quality southern name ...and we love the way "Lily Mae" sounds.

So, the task of naming a human is not easy (we get to "assign" what a person is called for the rest of her life!?!); we have done so thoughtfully and lovingly...but I guess you could say the jury is still out on which format fits this beautiful girl best. I am leaning towards Lily Mae, but the answer to your question is....hmmmm....

it's a great responsibility to name a child. and you never know...she might decide to be called something different one day. jon's name is jonathan but he shortened it in 8th grade. so at least she has a name that sounds good shortened too.
